Revision Rhinoplasty

Re-operation is called revision rhinoplasty for patients who have previously undergone functional or cosmetic surgery but are not satisfied with the result. In order to perform revision rhinoplasty surgery, it is necessary to wait for the previous surgery to complete the recovery, and this period is at least 1 year on average.

In revision rhinoplasty surgeries, the patient’s own rib or ready made rib graft is used, since the cartilages inside the nose are used before in rhinoplasty surgeries.

The recovery process in revision surgeries may take a little longer than the first operation. Since the tissues are more adherent due to the first surgery, the surgical application will be more difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

It would not be correct to say a specific time for the rhinoplasty operations. The operations take an average of 3 hours, but there may be operations that take 2 hours, or there are operations that take up to 5 hours. Factors such as the difficulty of the nose structure and previous operations affect the operation time, and the operation continues until we can reach the targeted nose shape.

According to the general condition of the patient after the operation, they usually need to stay in the hospital for 1 night, in rare cases 2 nights.

For the first few days, there may be pain that can usually be relieved with ordinary painkillers. After the third day, most of our patients do not even need painkillers.

We use a “piezo technique” in our surgeries. In the piezo technique, the bone structure is shaped using ultrasonic waves and the soft tissue damage is minimalized. Therefore, less swelling occurs in piezo rhinoplasty compared to the classical method. The bruise, which is mostly seen in the classical method, is less and sometimes not seen at all. Rough swellings and bruises in case of occurrence dissapears within 10 days.

Although the healing process varies according to the structure of the skin, most of the swelling decreases in the 2nd month, it approaches the ideal in the 6th month, but it is still not in the final ideal form and it is almost 100% completed in the 12th month. However, this process may take up to 2 years in thicker skins, while it may take up to 6 months in thin skins. Whether the skin is thin or thick is the most important factor. I usually give the sponge example to my patients. Thick skin is like a thick sponge, it holds a lot of water and leaves it later, while thin skin is like a thin sponge, it holds little water and releases water earlyer. The recovery process is closely related to the genetic structure of the patient, chronic diseases, age, alcohol-cigarette consumption and nutritional habits.

There are two methods in rhinoplasty, closed and open techniques. My preference has generally been for open rhinoplasty. In open surgery, an incision is made on the bar called the columella between the two nostrils. The reason I prefer this approach is to have a better command of the nasal skeleton during the surgery and most importantly to be able to use the ultrasonic bone shaping device, the piezzo. The stitches are thrown into dissolving on the 10th day. Wound healing in the area where the incision was made after the operation is completed in the first year. Although it varies from person to person in this region, the scar is usually too small to be seen with the naked eye. However, it can rarely be noticed with the naked eye in patients with poor wound healing.

Is It A Painful Procedure? Can I breathe while padded?

In our surgeries, we place a silicone tube (Doyle® Splint) tampon inside the nose to prevent adhesions that may cause nasal congestion in the long term. We remove this tampon preferably within 5-7 days. This process takes 15-20 seconds in total. It is a painless procedure. In the middle of these bumpers there are holes, so you will be able to breathe through these holes with the right care, even when they are buffered.

You can wear glasses three months after the surgery.

After the surgery, there are tampons in the nose, bands on the back of the nose and plaster for 1 week, after 1 week I take all of them, 1 more week we only have bands on the back of the nose.
